Record number referred to anti-radicalisation programme in Britain

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A record number of people were referred last year to Britain's state anti-radicalisation programme, Prevent. Reuters reports.

Some of those referred were under 15 years old, new data from the British authorities shows.

According to the latest figures, 9,957 people were referred from September 2024 to September 2025, an increase of 37 percent compared to the previous year.

Prevent has been a key element in Britain's security measures since the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, to prevent individuals from committing violent acts.

Former SF member joins the Social Democrats

Former member of parliament Halime Oguz is joining the Social Democrats. In April she left SF after 17 years in the party. Politiken reports.

She explains the change by saying she agrees more with the Social Democrats' immigration and citizenship policy.

- Denmark faces one of the biggest societal challenges, which I think is becoming bigger and bigger. And I don't believe we can solve that with heart signs and a good tone, Halime Oguz tells Politiken.

Oguz sat in the Folketing for SF from 2019 to 2022.

Iran and Oman agree on Hormuz deal

--------------------------------------

An agreement between Iran and Oman, which is to lead to a more open Strait of Hormuz, has reached its final phase.

The two countries, which lie on opposite sides of the Strait of Hormuz, have become 'principally agreed' on an agreement that will adopt a freight route through the Strait of Hormuz.

This is according to Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, speaking to the IRNA news agency as reported by Ritzau.

- A principled understanding has been reached on almost all issues, including the map for maritime entry and exit routes, says Kazem Gharibabadi to IRNA.

However, this does not mean that ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz will open immediately, as it requires, according to Iran, that the US simultaneously lifts the blockade of the strait. The US has not been part of the negotiations with Oman at all, according to the Iranians.

Two escapees charged with attempting to obtain a hand grenade in Herning

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Two young men, aged 19 and 24, who escaped from Kragskovhede State Prison in North Jutland in May, have now been charged with attempting to obtain a hand grenade.

This is according to the prosecution at the Mid- and West Jutland Police in an update.

The attempt to acquire a hand grenade occurred, according to the prosecution, during a conflict in Herning last spring in a case that also involved two girls.

- Our understanding is that the 19-year-old and the 24-year-old man planned for the two girls to take the train to Herning with the aim of detonating a hand grenade somewhere in Herning or Ikast, it is stated on Anklager Update.

The two men escaped from the prison on 24 May. According to the police, they must have carried out the planning from inside the prison.

Both men have been arrested again, one in Denmark and the other in Greece.

Number of children treated for malnutrition in Somalia triples

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Since January, the number of children treated for malnutrition in Somalia has tripled.

This is shown by new figures from the Red Cross' 'Save the Children' stabilisation centre in Baidoa, Somalia.

In June, 400 children were treated for severe malnutrition. That is nearly three times as many as in January, when the number was 143.

In total, the centre has treated 1,405 children over the past six months. That corresponds to an increase of 177% compared to last year, when the number was 507 children in six months.

A combination of extreme drought, high food prices, and poor harvests is making the hunger crisis in Somalia worse than it already was.

Right now, around 6.5 million people in Somalia ( https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/02/1167026 ) are facing acute famine.

Strong increase for greater weever in Danish waters

You can recognise it by the venomous spines on its dorsal fin.

And if you've cast your line in the Kattegat, there's a good chance you've caught a greater weever.

The chance of catching a greater weever has actually also increased, as there is now a reported marked increase for this excellent food fish in the Kattegat.

Politiken reports.

It is the Danish Fishermen's Association and DTU Aqua that are behind an experimental fishery in the Kattegat, which reports an increase in the fish stock.

During the experiment, which lasted a couple of months this year, approximately 800 tons of greater weever have been caught.

- There have probably never been as many greater weevers in the Kattegat as there are at the moment, says biologist Henrik S. Lund from the Danish Fishermen's Association to Politiken.

German defence company foresees billion-euro loss after lost order for warships

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The German government has dropped plans to buy six new warships, and that is hurting the bottom line at German defence company Rheinmetall.

It was originally planned that Rheinmetall would deliver the warships after a Dutch shipyard could not meet budget or deadlines, Ritzau writes.

The price for the six ships was originally 10 billion euros, 75 billion kroner, but according to the German Defence Ministry, the price could have ended up at 18 billion euros.

The Germans have now instead ordered eight smaller frigates from another German producer.

For Rheinmetall, the cancellation of the order means that sales expectations for this year are being downgraded by 300 million euros. The share price fell 18 percent when the news first broke.

Parasite outbreak in USA spreads to six new states

---------------------------------------------------

The extensive outbreak of the intestinal infection cyclosporiasis in the USA has spread to six new states and now covers a total of 15 states.

According to the US health authorities, more than 22,000 people have been confirmed or suspected infected, while 517 have been hospitalised.

The health authorities emphasise that the new registrations do not necessarily mean the infection is still spreading, but may be due to delayed reports of already infected individuals.

The outbreak is primarily linked to iceberg lettuce from the producer Taylor Farms, which has been recalled from the market.

Earlier this week, the state of Michigan recorded the first two deaths ( https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/udland/doede-under-stort-parasitudbrud-i-usa ) linked to the outbreak. Both individuals had serious underlying illnesses.

New Mexico sues US Department of Justice, demands access to unredacted Epstein documents

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The US state of New Mexico has sued the US Department of Justice on Wednesday to gain access to unredacted Epstein documents about the activities of the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein at his former ranch near Santa Fe.

This is according to a statement from the New Mexico Department of Justice on their website ( https://nmdoj.gov/press-release/new-mexico-sues-doj-for-blocking-access-to-unredacted-epstein-investigative-files-in-zorro-ranch-criminal-probe/ ).

According to the lawsuit, the federal government has refused without sufficient justification to share documents that could expedite the investigation. The state believes the documents contain evidence of grooming, human trafficking, sexual assault, and other illegal conduct linked to the property as well as individuals in Epstein's circle, including his former accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

- We asked the Justice Department to cooperate by providing access to documents that could be crucial for identifying victims, witnesses, and further criminal acts at Zorro Ranch. Their delays are actively harming our investigation and delaying the justice that Epstein's victims deserve, the statement reads.

According to the US Department of Justice, there are certain documents it cannot release out of consideration for privacy protection. Reuters reports this.

New Mexico, which is led by the Democrats, resumed its investigation of Epstein in February.

Trump administration repays more than 600 billion in tariffs

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The administration of US President Donald Trump has repaid about 100 billion dollars in tariffs, equivalent to about 647 billion kroner.

This happens after the US Supreme Court earlier this year ruled that a number of the tariff rates that Trump had imposed on his trading partners were illegal.

The repayment constitutes about 60 percent of the total tariff revenue that the US government collected under the scheme. This appears from a recent court document ( https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cit.19175/gov.uscourts.cit.19175.24.0.pdf ) from the US Customs and Border Protection agency.

A significant portion of the money, however, has still not been repaid. Partly because the repayments are still being processed by the US trade authorities, and partly because some importers have not yet provided their bank details.

The Trump administration has previously cited the so-called International Emergency Economic Powers Act to justify the tariffs - a law from 1977 that gives the president authority to regulate trade if a national emergency is declared.

German minister calls drone incident in Leipzig a "hybrid attack scenario"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By

Emma Klitnæs ( [email protected] )

According to German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Germany is "facing a hybrid attack scenario."

This is what he said at a press conference at Leipzig/Halle Airport this evening, where a drone with explosive material was found on a runway just under 24 hours ago. ( https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/udland/tysk-minister-haster-hjem-fra-ferie-efter-dronebombe-blev-fundet-paa-en-landingsbane-i-leipzig )

Dobrindt further stated at the press conference that the explosive drone, which was defused by German specialists, constitutes a "new threat level", and his colleague Armin Schuster, who is Interior Minister of the Free State of Saxony with responsibility for police and security, added that he cannot recall a similar situation ever occurring in Germany before.

- But it is part of the principle of the hybrid threat that it is not always immediately clear where it comes from, says Alexander Dobrindt, who also stated that who is behind it and what the target of the drone was remains unknown.

The Interior Minister did say at the press conference, however, that it is professional technology, and that those behind it are not amateurs.

DTEK states that their technicians have begun reconstruction, but the damage is extensive, so it will take time.

Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian media Pravda wrote that Ukraine's Energy Ministry confirmed that the Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Chernihiv regions were temporarily without power.

The Energy Ministry urged people to save electricity during the day.
