Here Comes the Renewal of the Rural School: Old Homes Move Out, So New Families Can Move In
Private investors have so far built seven new rental properties, with more on the way.

Daniel Skov Jensen moved to Astrup in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality with his wife and now three children - without knowing that they had become part of the local area's plan for housing rotation.
They bought a traditional 70's detached house from an older woman, who herself moved into a newly built rental property in the local area.
- We fell in love with the local community and a nursery and kindergarten nearby and eventually a school, Daniel Skov Jensen says.
The house cost 630,000 kroner, and they spent an extra million on renovation.

- We got a detached house with good square meters for the whole family. We are happy and satisfied, he says.
And that is exactly what housing rotation is meant to do, for the elderly to move out of their large detached houses to make room for new family homes - and even move into a smaller rental property without losing their network and ties to the local area.

Investors are behind it

It is a private group of investors who have built four new rental properties on the old grocery store site and three more on the old hotel site.
And more housing rotation is on the way.
Local forces with Jan Vestergaard at the helm have set up Housing Cooperative Kærnen, as an ApS.
- The local community is deeply dependent on a renewal of the population, says Jan Vestergaard.
Plans are well advanced. Ringkøbing-Skjern Housing Association is planning to build 5-10 common houses, and Kærnen is also collaborating with entrepreneur Stokholm H.U.S, who is planning to build 8 private rental properties.
There just needs to be four million kroner first.
- When we stand together, it should be enough. Here there is also a chance to get our money back again over time, it sounds from Jan Vestergaard.
Further 5-10 rental properties are in the pipeline in Faster-Astrup in collaboration with the municipality's non-profit housing association.
Daniel Skov Jensen thinks that housing rotation is a good idea, even though he was not aware of it when the family bought their detached house.
- It didn't occur to us until I was just tapped on the shoulder and told that I was part of this.
He also sees positive things in the fact that the elderly remain in the local community.
- They help keep the whole community going. We have volunteers at the activity center, among other things. So there is great interest in them staying here, says Daniel Skov Jensen.
